Music Project

The song I used for this project was “ I Love You… I’ll Kill You” by Enigma. Compared to my initial reaction to just the lyrics for the Lyric Project, my initial reaction to hearing the music for the first time was just as strong. The lyrics provide a good backdrop for the visual imagery, but it is the actual music that sets the tone for the piece. This song is sexy and dangerous, thus I have chosen a femme fatale feel for the lighting design. My major source of inspiration came from film noir images as well as images with saturate pop-like colors, such as pinks, purples, and cyans. Keeping with the idea of polarizing emotions, being hot and cold simultaneously, and the chaos of emotion, I’m adding an element of danger and mystery by incorporating more texture, shadow, and another color: green. Naturally, green has the prejudice of showing growth and new life. However, in lighting green is unnatural and otherworldly. This choice is used toward the end of the piece as a hint of how strange things are going to become.

I wanted to keep a shadowy, mysterious quality to the stage for the piece so I used more dimensional angles of light to provide visibilty, rather than relying solely on conventional front light. Various levels of side, down, and backlight were used to keep the focus on the figure as she sings. Three different gobos were used to provide texture and the idea of different mindsets and locale. The piece begins using a gobo that appears to look like the shadow of many fire-escape stairways coming from a stage right high side. This one was used to establish more of an alleyway locale as well as to root the beginning of the piece. The second gobo used, the varies lines, was also used in the lyric project. This texture, placed in 45-degree front light, is used during the chorus of the song, simulating the effect of light coming in through blinds. Finally, the center special contains a brick texture to suggest the destructive nature of the singer during the last moments of the song.
