Photo Recreation Project
I selected the third of my found images for my recreation due to its mysterious quality. When initially choosing the image, I noticed in the description that the photographer explained that he used a single light above the model’s head, so I chose to go down the same path.
I “set the stage,” so to speak, using a black skrim since the background in the original image is also dark. I set up my model center stage in the light lab and selected a downstage special. The light hit right on his head, shoulders, and arms. I adjusted the doll’s posture and the like until it was posed in a similar fashion to the model in the original image. After solidifying placement, I began working on the actual lighting.
I had to play for several minutes, varying the intensity, to replicate the way you can just barely see the facial features of the model. In the end, I ended up selecting quite a low intensity. I opted for softer edges and no texture. The provided that low to mid visibility look that I was going for. I also opted out of changing the color of the light. The light from the instrument in the light lab was so similar to the light in the photo that I decided against a color change.
What surprised me most about the recreation was the intensity that I had to use. I didn’t realize how bright the light really is at full intensity and I actually feared to decrease the intensity. I was afraid that it would be too dark, but I found the sweet spot! When framing the image for the picture, I attempted to get the same amount of body and negative space as was in the original image. Due to the nature of my phone camera, however, the final recreation image is slightly more narrow than the original.
