The images below inspire me and intrigue the lighting style that I am most drawn to: horror.

The image above piques my interest in theatrical horror. What we see is the back of a person who is illuminated from their front (considered backlight to the viewer). The light is a cool blue and has a very hazy, misty texture. The light appears to be hitting the subject straight from behind at a medium intensity. The haziness of the light provides for low to medium visibility. The lighting creates an intensely eerie atmosphere in the space and darkens the mood substantially. The cool blue color of the light offered a chilling, though intriguing, vibe. The color is not saturated enough darken the space, which is, I believe, where the sense of frightening intrigue comes from. The clarity of the light, or the lack thereof, provides the chilling factor and the mystery of the situation at hand. Should the color have been different, say red perhaps, there would be more of a sense of danger and perhaps fear.

This image is a still from a video portraying examples what different angles of light affect how we see the face. In this particular image, the light is coming from around 45 degrees to the left and down of the subject. The light is a warm amber and hits her face from below causing soft shadows the upper right side of her face. The light is not textured providing for a clear view of her facial features. The lighting provides medium to high visibility The color of the light mimics the color of candlelight and is highly saturated. The mood of the image is slightly unnerving. Combined, the color and the angle of the light provide an image that is definitely unsettling.

This final image is a handsome shot of a young man in shadow. He is lit from a single light source above his head. The color of the light is a warm whitish color, perhaps a super pale amber. With this angle of light, I can easily see the top of his head and his shoulders, though not so much his facial features because they are in shadow. The lighting is soft and natural looking providing a calmer mood. There is still a hint of mystery due to not being able to see the face of the individual, but due to the lack of saturation of color atmosphere is less creepy. It is still eerie, but not as disturbing as the first two.
