Lyric Project
Using unknown lyrics, and without listening to the corresponding music, I was tasked with lighting a "show" based on the lyrics in eight cues or less. Below are 4 of the cues from that project.
The text I received has many strong visceral words that easily evoke emotions. I have chosen to use those emotions to my benefit by using color and timing to evoke the emotions that are revealed in the text. My goal with this piece was to showcase the polarity between the emotions that are present in the piece. As you read through the text, the emotions that are being conveyed are very extreme. Hatred, obsession, love, and hate are all extremely polar emotions, and I sought to highlight the contrast between love and hate while spotlighting the emptiness that is loneliness and solitude. Using various extremely warm and cool tones, various angles, and a bar patterned texture, I wanted to provide a visual representation of the chaos of feeling so many emotions at once.
I feel like there are three very stark emotional zones, so to speak, that are present in the text that would have very different looks and feels. The first zone is Loneliness. In this zone, the colors are cool and stark. The space should feel barren and empty. Cool pale blues and isolation, I believe create the feeling of loneliness. Making use of shadow and various textured edges bring vast darkness to the space. The contrast between this and the other scenes should be very apparent as to convey the distant longing and the barren feeling that feeling too much can leave behind. The second zone is Passion. This zone is vibrant and colorful. The tones should be highly saturated with high intensity. The space should feel warm and inviting and intoxicating. There should also be something that is different and enticing. I chose to do this with dual tones of reds and blues to represent the fluidity of a burning, yet icy, passion. The third zone is anger. This zone feels dangerous, mysterious, and should create a sense of trepidation. The colors are hot and highly saturate but low in intensity. With this concept, the story I tell is a story of love and the dangers thereof.
